The Wind Blowing

Dear Beck Families,

What a wild week it has been!  I hope this note finds everyone back to normal (with electricity and heat!).  I did hear many areas are still without power.  Beck stood strong, and never lost power, but many of our Utica schools did and are still out today.  Our school roof was damaged, but luckily, the repairmen came today and got us put back together before the “April Showers” come!

News to know this week:

  1.  PROGRESS REPORTS – Today is mid-marking period.  Teachers have all students grades (3rd -6th grade only) updated on PowerSchool to reflect student status as of today.  If you still need PowerSchool logins, please stop by the Beck office.
  2. 6th Graders –  Shelby counselors visited Beck today to talk with the students attending Shelby next fall.  The Malow staff visited on Monday.  Our 6th graders are getting ready for their next step – moving to Junior High!
  3. 2nd Graders -  Field Trip to Troy Historical Museum.  This week our second graders went "back in time" and visited the historical buildings, including a one-room schoolhouse!  They had tales to tell when they returned!  Can you imagine life without an iPhone or tablet?
  4. March is Reading Month – We kicked off our “March is Reading Month” activities last week.  Students should have brought home a packet of information listing all the activities planned for this month.  Students who turned in their reading logs received a “Reading Month” bracelet today.  Logs can be turned in each week this month.  For more information, please check the Beck website, or contact your child's teacher.
  5. Kindergarten Round-Up  Parents of children who will be starting kindergarten in Utica Community Schools in fall 2017 can begin the registration process at Kindergarten Open House being held this coming Wednesday, March 15 at 7 p.m.  At the open house, parents will have the opportunity to learn about the district's nationally-recognized kindergarten program, meet the teachers and building staff and submit school registration forms.  Children are eligible for kindergarten if they turn five years old on or before September 1, 2017. However, children who turn five between September 1 and December 1, 2017 are eligible to enroll in kindergarten if their parents submit a waiver form.  For more information or for registration materials, please visit and click on the “Kindergarten 2017” link, or call the Beck office at 586-797-3900.
  6. Beck Family Science Night – Mark your calendars for Thursday, April 20 when we will host Cranbrook Academy of Science.  Cranbrook will bring 14 different science experiments to share with Beck students and their families that evening from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m.  Don’t miss out on the fun.  Flyers went home today – and space is limited, so make sure to get your reservations in quickly!
  7. 4th Grader Girls – “Mother and Daughter Maturation Program” – scheduled for Tuesday, April 11.  To RSVP, click on the link for a flyer:  Mother-Daughter Maturation Program
  8. BFV Road Rally – April 20, 2017 beginning at 6:30 p.m.  Find a team and come join the fun.  For more information and registration check out the flyer:  Road Rally Flyer

Have a great weekend everyone!
